While many of you are enjoying spring break, we are here to remind everyone that beach season is right around the corner and we can help you get beach ready in no time!
Don’t hide the veins, treat them
Spider veins are very common and usually appear on the legs and ankles as jagged red or purple lines. According to Web MD, they are actually warped blood vessels and occur in up to 60% of adults. Spider veins are small, thin lines that can appear on the face as well as legs, and can be red, purple or blue. Varicose veins are larger blood vessels that are swollen. They usually protrude from the skin like a raised tunnel, and can appear dark blue. They can appear anywhere, but are primarily found on the legs.
Interestingly, women are more prone to them than men, and they are more common on people whose job requires them to stand a lot (doctors, nurses, teachers). Other factors that increase the likelihood of spider or varicose veins include age, obesity, pregnancy, trauma or genetic disposition.
So what can you do about it? Keeping your weight in check and exercising regularly can help the symptoms of spider veins, as well as a diet low in sodium (to reduce fluid retention).
Cosmetically, a laser treatment can be used to treat spider veins. Our Lumenis M22 YAG laser is capable of producing a near-infrared wavelength that penetrates into the skin deeply, damaging the vein which turns it into scar tissue form. This happens when the lasing medium of Nd:YAG, which is a man-made crystal, is pumped by a high intensity lamp and placed into a resonator (the laser applicator). By creating a variable long pulse duration, and an appropriate spot size, it is possible to significantly heat deep skin tissues, such as blood vessels and vascular lesions. This procedure closes the source of blood and dies, and over time, the vein usually disappears. On smaller spider veins, results can be seen immediately.
The number of treatments needed to achieve results varies, but we’ve seen very good results after just one treatment. Some patients, however, do require two or three treatments.
For the month of April, we are offering our Lumenis M22 YAG Vein Treatment for $125 (regularly $150), just in time to get ready for beach season!
